Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the common questions we get asked regarding The Berits & Brown opportunity. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to phone us at 0845 157 7527.

Do people really want what Berits & Brown offer? Isn’t there a lot of competition in this market?

Competition in the food and wine industry is intense. However, Berits & Brown are in a small sector where a delicatessen, wine shop and coffee shop are all co-located in an attractive setting. They have gone further and defined a niche within this sector whereby they do not offer goods that are easily available in larger outlets or supermarkets…

"The deli is renowned for its innovative creative fusion of foods from Scotland and around the world, as well as providing a wide range of high-quality wines that you won't find in the supermarkets."

The Press and Journal: Apr 04, 2005

Further, Sue and Peter have developed their shop into a place that is cosy, informal and inviting. They have developed the concept of providing a place where local people and visitors can sit together and have a home made bowl of soup and a sandwich along with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine whilst chatting or browsing a newspaper, magazine or cookery book…

"This delicatessen, coffee shop and wine merchant has been the talk of Kippen since it opened in March - much of it coming from the always-full 12-seater communal table. It's all very relaxed, whether you build your own sandwich, or order a bespoke platter of cheese, charcuterie or smoked fish from the summer isles."

Independent on Sunday: Sep 26, 2004

"Customers say the deli has become a village centre point, where they can relax in true continental style with proper coffee and newspapers or browse the recipe book library."

The Herald: Aug 28, 2004

Special occasions are catered for with luxury hampers and fine food and wine packs...

"Throwing my head back to drop another strawberry into my mouth, I felt terribly A list. This was pure Hello. I felt ever so special and that was precisely what Brown and his business partner Sue Berits told me was there wish. Their swanky service is deliberately extravagant, purposefully posh and designed to make any special occasion a day to remember."

The Scotsman: Sep 15, 2004

Since opening Berits & Brown's dedication to sourcing the finest products and delivering the best service has gained them many regular customers and accolades from the industry...

"Berits & Brown the exclusive Scottish delicatessen, coffee shop and wine merchant has gone from strength to strength since its formation and is widely recognised as being one of the best in Scotland, earning a place in the finals of the Scottish Grocer awards."

Alloa and Hillfoots News: Apr, 2005

"This is a Delicatessen where you can find unusual products you simply can't find in the supermarkets. It's a welcoming place with a great atmosphere, and somewhere you want to go for a good cappuccino or a homemade lunch with a glass of wine.  The selection of cheeses, and other deli produce, together with a beautiful selection of fine wines, makes this deli a "must-visit" destination.

Every village should have a place like this!"

Isn’t setting up a shop very difficult? What do I need to do myself?

Opening a delicatessen, fine wine and first class coffee shop, and gaining the reputation of Berits & Brown, takes a lot of knowledge, experience and hard work.  Finding the right premises, gaining all the necessary approvals, sourcing products and suppliers and putting it all together can be daunting.  However, Sue and Pete have been through it all and you will have personal access to their knowledge and experience – as well as their proven business methods – to get you established right from the start.  We have contracted with a specialist retail property services company to locate the ideal premises for you.  In fact we’ll provide you with everything you need to ensure the success of your Berits & Brown Franchise.

Will I have any say in how my shop develops?

Once you’re ready you’ll be encouraged – and given every assistance – to enhance the local feel of your shop, by starting to source your own food/wine-related products.  The training you’ll have received, along with the experience gained in running your own outlet, will give you all the knowledge necessary to undertake this.

What type of person is perfect for this business?

We are very selective about the people we take on board. Why? Because our success is directly related to your success. Therefore we can’t afford to accept anyone. As Sue and Peter mentioned in their introductory letter, our main priority is to recruit the right people to become Berits & Brown Franchisees. People with a passion for good food and wine who are looking for a lifestyle that will allow them to share this passion day-to-day with their customers. People who are self-motivated and enthusiastic, and with the ability to provide first class customer service.

We know that the lifestyle on offer is enough to attract many people, that’s why we have a stringent policy on recruitment. For starters you must have the following qualities, or we won’t even consider you…

Have a passion for good food and wine and want to learn more
Looking for a business that you’ll have a REAL say in
Are highly motivated
Enjoy dealing with people ‘day to day’
Can provide exceptionable customer service
And most importantly...
Have the desire to run your own ethical business!

What support structure do you have in place?

We believe that the support structure of any Franchise organisation is one of the most important aspects of running a successful Franchise.  You have to know that you’ll never be left alone ‘to get on with it’. Of course our training is so detailed you won’t need constant supervision, but you will need help from time to time.  That’s why we have a structure in place that ensures your success.
